Midsummer Rope
Jun 21 @ 17:00 – 22:00

Let’s celebrate the summer solstice with doing something we love. Midsummer Rope is aiming to create a free and space for shibari/kinbaku practice and sessions. The event is split into three parts:
5 – 6 p.m.: PRACTICE SPACE
6 – 7 p.m.: ROPE SPEED DATING
7 – 10 p.m.: FREE ROPE JAM

MIDSUMMER ROPE – PART ONE [5 – 6 p.m.]

PRACTICE SPACE

It’s been a while since you touched your ropes? You would like to warm up your fingers or stretch your limbs a little bit before going into the Rope Speed Dating later? You would like to hyperfocus on getting this specific harness just the way you want it? You want to exchange nerdiness and techniques with fellow riggers or simply go through the basic knots together a few times? You want to ask around if someone can help you get started with tying? This is the space for that.

Beware: We as the organizers will not ‘provide’ any professional shibari teachers for beginner’s classes – but this event is meant to create a space for education and exchange within the community. There will for sure be people there, who can at least show you the basic single column tie to start with, if you ask nicely, so there might be a beginner’s-corner forming.

Who is welcome & What to expect

Rope-loving or rope-curious people of all genders, ages (18+), orientations, or backgrounds. We expect everybody to treat others with respect and do their best to be mindful with each other at any time. Any shibari experience level is welcome. You may join solo or with your rope partner(s). The event is meant to facilitate connections within the rope community, but please don’t expect to find a ‘guaranteed’ person to tie with or to teach you things.

Safety

Everyone ties at their own responsibility. We expect riggers and models to only move within their safe skillset or otherwise actively ask for support, if they want to try something out that they are not sure with – never just assume that someone will be watching anyways. We’re happy to support each other, but we’re not lifeguards by the side of the rope pool. It is within your own responsibility to discuss boundaries and safety issues with rope partners, although we can offer support if needed. R.A.C.K. and P.R.I.C.K. are the general outlining consent concepts here. (Consent Frameworks Explained: S.S.C., R.A.C.K. & P.R.I.C.K.).

Location & Timing

Midsummer Rope will take place at Andrými. We might have some floor mats, but don’t count on it – please bring your own blanket to tie on and mats, if you have any. There will be limited suspension options available. Unfortunately, the event is not wheelchair accessible. For a less chaotic environment, it’s nice if you show up on time at 5 p.m. – if you join late, make sure to not disturb people that are tying. If you want to help set up the space, you are welcome to arrive at 4.30 p.m.

What to bring

  • your own ropes and equipment
  • your own safety scissors
  • a blanket to tie on (+mats, if you have any)
  • drinks and snacks for yourself or for sharing
  • if you have: spare rope to share with those that don’t have any
  • if you have: educational books on shibari

MIDSUMMER ROPE – PART TWO [6 – 7 p.m.]

ROPE SPEED DATING

We want to facilitate the opportunity to get to know new rope partners with this lovely fun format, that was inspired by the meet-and-tie workshop at the European Rigger and Model Exchange in Berlin. We will start with a short introduction round with some input and exercises on consent and communication for shibari, then start the rope speed dating! There will be an open matching system that will allow us to go into very short try-out sessions with other participants, whereby limits and wishes can be negotiated individually. Nobody has to tie up with anyone they don’t want to. It is also possible to agree a suitable role allocation with each person. We tie up in short sequences of 3 – 4 minutes, with room for short conversations before and after.

Rope speed dating is great fun, exciting, social and communicative. It trains the ability to tie in a creative and original way and trains attentiveness and flexibility: the ability to adapt to different people and situations, according to the motto: There is no ‘wrong’ partner, there is only the ‘wrong’ game. It also helps to learn to communicate better, to clearly formulate wishes and boundaries and to express them.

Suitable for all levels. Switching is possible and very encouraged. You should be prepared to interact with people of any gender or sexual orientation.

Since this is a more structured format, please show up on time if you want to participate!

MIDSUMMER ROPE – PART THREE [7 – 10 p.m.]

OPEN ROPE JAM

Free & safe space for local shibari/kinbaku/bondage enthusiasts to meet, mingle and tie. We’re inviting all riggers, models, switches and rope-curious people of Reykjavik to join for an evening of rope play!

This third part of the midsummer rope event is meant to give room for individual sessions and create a nice shibari community atmosphere. The jam takes place right after the rope speed dating, so you have the space to explore the new found connections in a less structured setting. The focus of the rope jam won’t be on teaching – if you’re a complete beginner, we recommend joining at 5 p.m. for the practice space, where there will be more focus on knots and exchange, and then use the jam to put the new knowledge into practice.

Who is welcome & What to expect

Rope-loving or rope-curious people of all genders, ages (18+), orientations, or backgrounds.
