Anarchism, Democracy and the Icelandic Constitution
In 2012 Iceland embarked on a process of rewriting its national constitution. Unlike many examples around the world where countries renew or change their constitutions, this was to be a ‘crowd-sourced’ constitution, with the people of Iceland having a more direct and participatory role in how the new constitution was to look. This discussion workshop will reflect on that process and ask what it means for something a process like writing a constitution to be genuinely democratic. How can people be actively involved? What barriers are there stopping certain people from taking part? How can those barriers be overcome. Drawing on anarchist ideas of democracy, the workshop builds on discussions with activists and others in Iceland to explore what it would take for participatory democracy to work properly.
The workshop takes place in English (interpretation by request) and is hosted by Dr. Thomas Swann:
“I completed my PhD at the University of Leicester School of Management in September 2015. Prior to that, I gained an MA in Social and Political Philosophy from Radboud University Nijmegen in 2010 and an MA in Philosophy from the University of Glasgow in 2008. My research has examined the connections between anarchism and organisational cybernetics, aiming to develop ‘anarchist cybernetics’ as a framework for understanding radical left social movement organisation. More broadly, this included looking at the nature of autonomy in anarchist organisation, the relationship between tactics, strategy and grand strategy and the ways in which communication can be understood in a radical left context. An important element of this work focused on the notion of alternative social media.”

This wants to be a short presentation sharing some information about “Anarche” with you – a project in Berlin, where a group of people demanding space in a seemingly space-less city decided to built a boat on the river Spree and thereby created a constantly self-made platform for discussions, support of activist groups, manifestations, theatre performances, movie screenings, concerts and so on. The presentation is going to give a short overview on how the idea and the project evolved and show examples of actions that happened on and with Anarche in the past and present.

We will join together to prepare and enjoy dumplings. These can take whatever form we would like, as long as they are vegan! Ravioli, momo, pierogie: as we like. The presentation will be about the Quartier libre des Lentilleres (Lentillere’s free borough).
It is a patch of 6ha of squatted farmland in the middle of the city of Dijon in France.
Started in 2010 more than 150 persons are living there today, cultivating the land, building communities and solidarities, organising events, workshops, sharing skills, building solidarity with migrants and refugies and preparing the resistance against the urbanistic project planned on this area.
I will present briefly some of the varied projects, groups and activities that compose the mosaic of the borough.
Then I’ll go through the chronology that led to its occupation and developpement.
And I’ll end with some perspective on the current threat it’s facing and the resistance organising.

Monthly workshop session led by members of Kvæðamannafélið Iðunn, the organisation set up to preserve and pass on the singing traditons of Iceland (see http://rimur.is/?page_id=367). The aim of the sessions is to learn, practise and share traditional Icelandic folk songs, for example tvísöngur. We will also welcome people from other singing traditions to share their songs. The sessions are open to all. No previous singing experience is necessary. Songs will be taught ‘by ear’, with some notation available for people who find it helpful.
We will make every effort to accommodate everyone who comes. In particular, we are aware that some people are nervous about singing in ‘public’ situations. We will make every effort to make the sessions welcoming and supportive of everyone attending.
