Letter Writing to Trans (and Other) Prisoners 2: Transgender Day of Visibility
Mar 31 @ 18:00 – 20:30
Letter Writing to Trans (and Other) Prisoners 2: Transgender Day of Visibility

This is an independently organised event.

After a year, we are meeting for another letter-writing evening. Carrying on the tradition of the Anarchist Black Cross and other collectives as well as celebrating the Transgender Day of Visibility, we will meet and spend the evening in solidarity writing to trans prisoners. We will write to Chelsea Manning, Kanautica Brown, Marius Mason and others.

We focus especially on reaching trans prisoners as they are not only oppressed by the prison–industrial complex, but in addition also face omnipresent transphobia, transmisogyny, physical and sexual violence, frequent prolonged solitary confinement, and denied access to HRT.

At the same time you are absolutely welcome to use the space and time to write to people of your choice. It would be especially good if you have contact information for people in prison here in Iceland. You could for example write to Nara Walker, a woman imprisoned for 3 months for defending herself against her abusive partner (https://grapevine.is/news/2019/02/20/video-nara-walker-beings-prison-sentence-petition-for-pardon-surpasses-17000-signatures/).

We will provide a short list of names and addresses (independent research is welcome!), guidelines on how to write to prisoners, envelopes, and a limited number of stamps. Bringing stamps and/or donating towards their cost is very welcome, as well as bringing pens and paper.

A short intro about a few well-known cases of trans prisoners and the situation in general will take place in the first 15-20 minutes. There might be a movie screening (TBA) as well.

This is a trans-focused event: everyone is welcome to attend, but please be aware of your behaviour and make sure you are not assuming anyone’s gender or pronouns and so are not reinforcing the casual transphobia around us.

Name/pronoun tags will be available.

Accessibility:

The building is currently not wheelchair accessible, unfortunately, but it is our top priority to make it accessible as soon as possible.

There is a step before the garden gate and then 5 steps leading to the main entrance, each 17 cm high, door widths in the building vary between 50 cm (upstairs washroom door) and 80 cm (entrance door), and the washrooms are so far only on the upper floor and in the basement. The door to the meeting room is 75 cm wide (as most other doors in the building).

The event takes place on the ground floor. Both washrooms in the building are gender neutral.

Policing the stranger
Apr 2 @ 17:00 – 19:00
A lecture on how the police in Iceland was created and who created it, and what the role of immigrants into Reykjavík has been in sustaining Icelandic radicalism.
The lecture is based on a historical study of Icelandic policing and the history of UTL, and on the history of Icelandic labour, where immigrants have now rekindled class struggle in a coalition with the underpaid female workforce.

Photography Matinee // Ljósmyndun Matinee
Apr 13 @ 13:00 – 15:00

Dear Everyone,

We are gladly inviting you to our first Photography Matinee where we are going to screen:
Finding Vivian Maier (2013).
We don’t want to spoiler the movie but we recommend it a lot, it is very inspiring and interesting!
Here is a little info on about her from Wikipedia:

„Vivian Dorothy Maier (February 1, 1926 – April 21, 2009) was an American street photographer. Maier worked for about forty years as a nanny, mostly in Chicago’s North Shore, pursuing photography during her spare time. She took more than 150,000 photographs during her lifetime, primarily of the people and architecture of Chicago, New York City, and Los Angeles, although she also travelled and photographed worldwide.[1]
During her lifetime, Maier’s photographs were unknown and unpublished; many of her negatives were never printed.”

Looking forward to see all of you interested on our first screening!

Photo Gathering ( Light ) // Ljósmyndakvöld ( Ljós )
Apr 20 @ 18:00

An independently organised event by the Darkroom Collective.

Hæ!
We would like to invite you all photography lovers (analog and digital), aspiring photographers and pro, to our monthly gathering at Andrými.

The idea is to have a place where photographers of any type can share their knowledge/work once a month with a bunch of other camera lovers.

This month’s theme is “Light”.

We encourage you to get some new shots in the next weeks or to look into your archive of pics and bring a couple of images, no matter the format. The aim of this exercise is to exchange opinions, points of view and share our knowledge.

Also, regardless the assignment, feel free to bring any material, gear etc. with you. Doubts, questions, ideas or thoughts for next meetings are very welcome as well.

Radical 1 May – sign making // Róttækur 1 Maí – skiltagerð
Apr 28 @ 14:00 – 17:00

Join us in creating signs for the march on 1 May.

On 1 May we all gather together at Hlemmur square as a radical block, we then walk to Laekjartorg at the rear of the march. During this march, we want to be heard/seen. For this we need visual aid.

A limited amount of materials are provided, but bring your own if you can. (e.g.: wood, fabric, paint, markers)

About 1 May:

IWW Ísland, Trans Ísland, No Borders Iceland, Refugees in Iceland, Róttæki Sumarháskólinn, Rauða Regnhlífin, Black & Pink Iceland and Innblástur Arkestra invites you to take part in radical May Day celebrations for an afternoon of solidarity, intersectionality and empowerment!

We want you to join us for a Radical and Intersectional International Worker´s Day! We fight not only for better wages and working conditions, we fight for the liberation of all of humanity and to put an end to the ecological destruction of our planet by capitalism. We fight for diversity, equality and justice, no matter what country you were born in, no matter your gender, no matter your sexuality! No one can represent us but ourselves, we fight for an end to bosses and politicians dominating us and making our lives miserable! We fight within ourselves to put an end to the rape culture and the racism that surrounds us!

The theme for this year is “Challenging the Social Contract”. The “social contract” is the belief that we must be thankful and accept the authority of our government and our bosses, it is the idea that we should not protest because it is rude, that we should accept conventions rather than challenge the social order, and it is the legal doctrine that prevent us from improving our work conditions and wages except by negotiations through representatives.

Here is the schedule of events:

13.00 – Forming a radical bloc on Hlemmur
13:30 – March last the MayDay procession down Laugavegur to Lækjartorg
14:00 – Gathering at Lækjartorg for free coffee, listening to different speakers

15:30 – Friendly get-together at Múltikúlti, at Barónsstígur 3, with waffles coffee, and music. Get to know likeminded radical people and make connections for a truly radical and intersectional struggle
