Lecture: Practicing Tibetan Buddhism in the Modern World
Jan 15 @ 20:00 – 22:00

American Buddhist monk Lama Erik Drew Jung at Andrými!

Come and join us for a cozy evening talk on Tibetan Buddhism with Venerable Bodhi Lama Erik Drew Jung, an American Buddhist monk of the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Lama Erik is a warm and engaging speaker who is on a European tour this month and is visiting Iceland for a week.

Bodhi Lama Erik Drew Jung grew up in Portland, Oregon and at an early age was introduced to Mahayana Buddhism by his father, a practitioner in the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism. In 1990, he earned a bachelor degree from The Evergreen State College. In 1994, he received a licensure in acupuncture (Lic. Ac.) from the Worlsey Institute of Classical Acupuncture, and in 2000, a master degree in acupuncture from The Academy for Five Element Acupuncture.

Lama Erik first took refuge in the Three Jewels 1989 with H. H. The Dhali Lama, and in the spring of 2004 met his root teacher, Tibetan meditation master and thirty-third generation Dzogchen lineage holder, H.E. Dzogchen Khenpo Choga Rinpoche. He took refuge vows with Rinpoche that day, receiving the refuge name Orgyen Thabkey Dorje, and has served and studied closely with his Root Guru ever since.

Since 2004, Orgyen Thabkey Dorje has cumulatively spent more than three years in Dzogchen Buddha Path Retreats and Internships. He took monastic vows in 2008, and since 2010 has worked full time with the Dzogchen Lineage Translation Committee to help Rinpoche compose, translate, and edit the forthcoming Third Edition Buddha Path, along with many other Buddhist texts and sadhanas in English. As well, he has taught Buddhism widely across the U.S., and conducted many overseas teaching tours in Europe and Russia.

Photography Gathering // Ljósmyndakvölð
Jan 24 @ 19:00

An independently organised event by the darkroom collective.

Hæ! We would like to invite you all photography lovers to our second gathering at Andrými. We are a bit late in organisation but it’s all good, just a couple of points:

We chose a theme for the assignment of this month; Night. In this case due to the delay we encourage you to take a look into your archive of pics and bring a couple of images. The aim of this exercise is to exchange opinions, points of view and what not while having a discussion and feedback.

Also, regardless the assignment, feel free to bring any material, gear etc. with you. Doubts, questions, ideas or thoughts for next meetings are very welcome as well.

Let’s have a nice meeting and fun!

Accessibility:
The building is currently not wheelchair accessible, unfortunately, but it is our top priority to cultivate a wheelchair accessible space. This is a continuing goal of the organizers of Andrými.

There is a step before the garden gate and then 5 steps leading to the main entrance, each 17 cm high, door widths in the building vary between 50 cm (upstairs washroom door) and 80 cm (entrance door), and the washrooms are so far only on the upper floor and in the basement. The door to the meeting room is 75 cm wide (as most other doors in the building).

Both washrooms in the building are gender neutral.

Challenges of activists in Israel/Palestine
Jan 25 @ 17:30 – 19:30

A main goal of settler-colonial regimes is to enclose indigenous communities within Bantustans, walls, barriers, borders and checkpoints, turning them into refugees within their own territory. Various narratives and myths have been used by colonizers to justify taking over the so-called ‘virgin land of wilderness’, at the expense of the native population that has been inhabiting the area for centuries. Ethnic cleansing, genocide and transfer are still a means to an end, while technological advancements have been playing their role in executing such inhumane policies for decades.

Recently (11 January 2019) it was reported that Elbit Systems, which develops high-tech weapons for the Israeli army, sold its SkyStriker lethal drone to Azerbaijan. This state-of-the-art drone carries a 5kg warhead and can fly at a speed of up to 300 knots (555 kmph). Such advance weapons are often used disproportionately by powerful states against stateless groups, with little fear of retribution, and drone-strikes are still justified by politicians in the name of ‘the war on terror’ by arguing that they are both extremely accurate and keep the soldiers safe.

Considering this, what are the challenges that human rights activists are facing in a place like Israel and Palestine? What motivates them? And which lessons may we learn from the successes of the activists of the past, such as the ones who struggled against the apartheid regime in South Africa?

We will watch the first 25 min from the film “five broken cameras” followed by a 20 min talk and then we will open it for a discussion.
