Skipulagsfundur fyrir fjölskyldumorgnar// Family morning meeting
Sep 16 @ 11:30 – 13:00

Do you want to get involved in a project in Andrými? We are looking for new and old volunteers to join a collective to support the family group and their weekly family mornings on Sundays 🎈

Our house and garden at Bergþórugata 20 has a long and wonderful history as a kindergarten. We want to do more to welcome families into the house and garden, and make it more family-friendly and an inclusive place for children.

The family mornings are a place where parents and kids can come together in a non-oppressive, welcoming and supportive space.

At this meeting we’ll be making a collective to help the family group carry on meeting each Sunday. We’ll organise the work we’ll do to support the group, such as:
– opening the house with the families involved
– making breakfast, tea and coffee
– helping tidy up
– providing child-friendly activities and workshops such as juggling, yoga, crafts, music, games
– reaching out to lonely and marginalised families, particularly the asylum seeker and refugee community in Reykjavík, to include them in the space

You don’t have to be a parent to be involved in this project.

Come and bring your ideas and join us for kaffi this Sunday!

Accessibility:

The building is currently not wheelchair accessible, but it is our top priority to make it so and we are working on getting city approval to make changes to the building.

There is a step before the garden gate and then 5 steps leading to the main entrance, each 17 cm high, door widths in the building vary between 50 cm (upstairs washroom door) and 80 cm (entrance door), and the washrooms are so far only on the upper floor and in the basement. The door to the meeting room is 75 cm wide (as most other doors in the building).

There is plenty of space outside the house and in the garden to park prams and pushchairs.

Both washrooms in the building are gender neutral, and have both adult and child-sized toilets and sinks.

Information on the family group [English below]:

We are a group of families who meet in Andrými where we organise weekly events on Sundays. Please join us to relax, talk, create, plan, build, construct, deconstruct, and form the world we want for ourselves and our families.

You are welcome to bring food for your family, and to share, if you would like. If someone in your family has special needs (accessibility, safety, allergies, etc.) we will try to make the space and activities safe and enjoyable for everybody! There is space to relax and some tea and coffee.

We are cultivating an environment for fun and reflection where we fight oppression and do not allow discrimination and violence. The space where we meet, and the activities we organize, are intended to be accessible to people of all different abilities, and we welcome people who may have felt marginalized or excluded from other family groups.

As a part of the Andrými social cooperative, we adhere to the policies of solidarity with oppressed people, support of the natural world, fight against violence including economic violence, and encourage collective decision making.

‘Defend the Sacred’ – Indigenous Resistance Against Industrial Projects in the So-Called-Canada
Sep 18 @ 19:00 – 21:00

An independently organised event.

An informal introduction to the current Indigenous-led struggle to protect the waters and land in Mi’kma’ki (specifically the so-called Nova Scotia and New Brunswick) and Secwepemcul’ecw (so-called South-Central British Columbia) followed by discussion.

The talk will focus on the Mi’kmaq resistance against the Alton Gas salt cavern project on the Shubenacadie River, and the Secwepemc Tiny House Warriors protesting in similar way against the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain Pipeline Project, together with very brief setting in the context of the history of Indigenous resistance in so-called Canada. Additional information will be available on site (texts in English).

Canada’s trying to preach reconciliation but in fact things are as dire as ever – Indigenous unceded land is being quietly sold to corporations such as Alton Gas and BP Canada; Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people still routinely go missing, and Indigenous lives are treated as disposable.

Let’s come together to remember Tina Fontaine, Loretta Saunders, Colten Boushie and many more & talk about action.

There’s no entrance, but we’ll try to collect some money to support the Mi’kmaq water protectors & the Treaty Camp (https://stopaltongas.wordpress.com/donate/) on Shubenacadie (please bring cash). The talk will take place in English.

Accessibility:
The building is currently not wheelchair accessible, unfortunately, but it is our top priority to make it so. An architect is already working on drawing a ramp and making an accessible bathroom in the space.

Discussion Workshop: Anarchism, Democracy and the Icelandic Constitution
Sep 25 @ 18:00

An independently organised event.

Anarchism, Democracy and the Icelandic Constitution

In 2012 Iceland embarked on a process of rewriting its national constitution. Unlike many examples around the world where countries renew or change their constitutions, this was to be a ‘crowd-sourced’ constitution, with the people of Iceland having a more direct and participatory role in how the new constitution was to look. This discussion workshop will reflect on that process and ask what it means for something a process like writing a constitution to be genuinely democratic. How can people be actively involved? What barriers are there stopping certain people from taking part? How can those barriers be overcome. Drawing on anarchist ideas of democracy, the workshop builds on discussions with activists and others in Iceland to explore what it would take for participatory democracy to work properly.

The workshop takes place in English (interpretation by request) and is hosted by Dr. Thomas Swann:

“I completed my PhD at the University of Leicester School of Management in September 2015. Prior to that, I gained an MA in Social and Political Philosophy from Radboud University Nijmegen in 2010 and an MA in Philosophy from the University of Glasgow in 2008.
My research has examined the connections between anarchism and organisational cybernetics, aiming to develop ‘anarchist cybernetics’ as a framework for understanding radical left social movement organisation. More broadly, this included looking at the nature of autonomy in anarchist organisation, the relationship between tactics, strategy and grand strategy and the ways in which communication can be understood in a radical left context. An important element of this work focused on the notion of alternative social media.”
