EN: In academic discourse, the prevailing perspective is that in Europe, and elsewhere, migration in recent years has been incorporated into processes of securitization. This is a concept which, in its broadest sense, refers to situations in which consensus is reached to define a particular issue as a threat, thereby turning it into a “security issue” that must be addressed. In other words, the securitization of migration entails viewing migration as a threat to both public order and general security, and as something that requires a response using whatever measures are considered most appropriate.

Iceland is not exempt from this development, as can be seen in increasingly harsh rhetoric about refugees and migrants in public debate, as well as in a legal framework that steadily restricts the opportunities for people from certain parts of the world to apply for international protection or to reside in Iceland at all.

This lecture focuses on the securitization of migration in an Icelandic and European context. The event will be held in English and Icelandic. Following the lecture, there will be discussion and an opportunity to ask questions.

IS: Í fræðaheiminum er ríkjandi það sjónarhorn að í Evrópu, og víðar, hafi fólksflutningar á síðustu árum verið innlimaðir í ferli öryggisvæðingar, sem er hugtak sem í sinni víðustu mynd vísar í það þegar sátt næst um að skilgreina tiltekið málefni sem ógn og það verður þar með að „öryggismáli“ sem taka þarf á. Með öðrum orðum má segja að öryggisvæðing fólksflutninga gerir að verkum að litið er svo á að fólksflutningar ógni bæði röð og reglu sem og öryggi almennt, og nauðsynlegt sé að bregðast við þeirri staðreynd með hvaða aðferðum sem þykja best til þess fallnar.

Ísland er ekki undanskilið þessari þróun eins og sjá má dæmi um í æ harkalegri orðræðu um flótta- og farandfólk opinberri umræðu, sem og lagaramma sem sífellt þrengir að möguleikum fólks frá ákveðnum heimshlutum á að sækja um alþjóðlega vernd eða búa á Íslandi yfir höfuð.

Í þessu erindi er sjónum beint að öryggisvæðingu fólksflutnina í íslensku og evrópsku samhengi. Viðburðurinn fer fram á ensku og íslensku. Að erindinu loknu verða umræður og tækifæri til að spyrja spurninga.

Róttæki vetrarháskólinn á sér stað þriðja miðvikudag hvers mánaðar, frá 17:30 - 19:00. Formið getur tekið á sig mismunandi myndir, t.d. fyrirlestrar, vinnustofur, lestrarhringur eða hringborðsumræður.

The Radical Winter University in andrými seeks to connect radical activism and ideas and that way take responsibility for our own education.
Radical activism for us means struggles for democracy, economic justice, gender equality, protection of the natural world, and the rights of marginalized groups, just to name a few.

When we say ideas we are refering to any kind of human thought, whether artistic, academic, arising from experience or all of these at once.
Our goal is to share knowledge, open a platform for the co-creation of knowledge and to strengthen solidarity between all those who want to work towards a nurturing and emancipated society, free from fascism and oppressive hierarchies.

It takes place on the third Wednesday of each month, from 17:30 - 19:00. The format can take different forms, e.g. lectures, workshops, reading circles or roundtable discussions.
